Schmack BioEnergy Opens New Engineering & Laboratory Facility at OARDC Campus

On Tuesday October 7, 2008 Schmack BioEnergy (Schmack), a Cleveland based renewable energy company, celebrated the opening of its new engineering and laboratory facility in partnership with The Ohio State University’s Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) and The Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center (OBIC) located on the OARDC campus in Wooster, OH.   The partnership is an example of continuing efforts to join academia and industry for the benefit of Ohio.

"We are extremely pleased with the public private partnership with Schmack BioEnergy,” commented Dr. Steven A. Slack, Associate Vice President for Agricultural Administration and Director of OARDC.  “Their technology has significant energy implications for all Ohioans; we will contribute through our research and development efforts."  The Schmack/OARDC/OBIC project relates closely to several of Ohio’s strategic development industries, namely advanced energy and environmental technologies, agriculture and food processing, bioscience and bioproducts, and polymers and advanced materials.

Dr. Stephen Myers, Director of OBIC, said that “organic wastes can be converted into a renewable source of fuels and materials. Bioproducts are a major source of innovation for Ohio’s leading polymer industries.”

Comments were also made by Dr. Harold Keener, Professor and Associate Chair of the OARDC Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department, who applauded the relationship saying “Schmack BioEnergy's interest in methane production from organics and their holistic approach to resource recovery is in sync with OARDC/OSU goals of developing renewable energy systems and recovering valuable resources from waste. Having their laboratory on campus affords opportunities for close working relationships and synergism between Schmack personnel, university researchers and students.  Having their laboratory on campus also enhances opportunities for undergraduate students to do internships in an important and growing industry and will enable master and doctoral graduate students in Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering, as well as other discipline, to investigate society/industry based problems in one of the best equipped laboratories in the country.”

City of Wooster Mayor Robert Breneman said, “We here in the City of Wooster are extremely excited to have Schmack BioEnergy as a new business partner in town.  We look forward to working with them in the future to help address the waste product and energy needs of the area.”

Schmack President Mel Kurtz ended his comments by stating that, “We recycle energy, we can anchor our economy and we improve our environment.”

Schmack BioEnergy is a renewable energy company building and operating organic residual processing facilities.  Schmack’s process creates biogas which is typically 60% methane.  This methane can used to generate energy in the forms of natural gas, motor vehicle fuel (CNG) and/or electricity.  In other words, the Schmack system cost effectively processes organic waste into sustainable renewable energy while improving our environment and strengthening our economy.
